Making PARAFFIN WAX IN THE CANDLE INDUSTRY. Two operators producing the coloured effect found on twisted candles. The candle is first dipped in coloured wax and then twisted in a second bath until the outside edge if left clean of colour. Paraffin wax from petroleum became available in the late 1850's and since such wax was not only cheap and of an attractive appearance, but yielded more light from the same weight of material, it quickly became the basis of by far the greater part of the candle industry
