Marcus Stone (1840-1921) British history painter
Marcus Stone (1840-1921) British history painter. Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn Observed by Queen Catherine (Catherine of Aragon), in doorway, whose portrait is on wall behind them. Anne has been playing the lute for the king watched by a gathering of courtiers. Cardinal Wolsey, right of centre, looks on. The little dog, traditionally symbolising fidelity, is an ironic touch. Oil on canvas. 1870. Private collection
