Mathew Hopkins (d1647) witch-finder of Manningtree, Essex, England. In 1645 Hopkina had 60 people executed for witchcraft in Essex alone. He fell under suspicion himself and was swum as a witch. He floated so was found guilty and executed. Woodcut circa 1830
