PLAGUE OF ATHENS 430 BC thought to have been brought to the city by trading between Piraeus and North Africa. Athens crowded by people from the countryside seeking safety in the city from attacks during Peloponnesian War: devastated population and bodies left unburied, especially near temples, and around wells where sufferers had gone to try to assuage the terrible thirst which was one of the symptoms of the disease.
