SS Republic sending a radio signal for help. 23 January 1909, in fog, the 15, 000 Republic ;struck the Italic ship Florida, carrying emigrants off the east coast of the US. The Republic was fitted with radio and the wire less operator sent out a distress signal. The response of ships in the area was such that all 1700 people in the two ships were saved.
