Venus and Adonis mid-1630s Oil on canvas, (Cincinnati Art Museum). By Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640). Based upon Ovid's story, Metamorphoses (8 A. D). Pricked by one of Cupid's arrows, Venus falls in love with Adonis the hunter. Rubens was born in Siegen in Germany, but from the age of 10 he lived and went to school in Antwerp, Belgium, where he became an important Flemish Artist
