Wilhelm I (1797-1888) King of Prussia from 1861 being proclaimed Emperor of Germany, 1871. After the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, as a gesture of further humiliation of the French, on 18 January 1871 Wilhlem I was crowned as the first Emperor of Germany in the Hall of Mirrors, Versailles, the palace built by Louis XIV of France.
