Woodcut engraving depicting a hornbook. A hornbook is a book that serves as primer for study. Letters, numbers and prayers were written on a piece of paper and stuck onto the piece of wood which had a handle. A very thin, transparent piece of horn was fixed over the letters to protect them. Sometimes there were pictures on the reverse side
