Wrought iron tubular trussed bridge over the river

Wrought iron tubular trussed bridge over the river Wye at Chepstow, circa 1885. This bridge, constructed 1849-1852, was an innovative design by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) and the use of wrought iron tubular girders is considered to be a dummy run for his last great masterpiece, the Royal Albert bridge over the Tamar at Saltash. The Chepstow bridge carried the South Wales Railway over the Wye. Brunel was engineer to the railway. From The Popular Educator'. (London, circa 1885)
