Collection of the Week: Judges Postcard Archive

This week, we continue our world domination, at least in cornering the market in vintage postcard images, by sharing a new contributor, the well-known postcard publisher, Judges. We gave you a small taster of this in our last News of Note newsletter but are pleased to announce that we have now added more than 6000 images from this noted purveyor of scenic scenes to our website - all now ready for licensing.

The company was founded in 1902 by Fred Judge who started out initially as a, "landscape photographer, lanternist and photographic materials dealer". The postcard boom was to provide him with a new outlet for his work, and he began to publish cards of the local area, soon expanding to show views from around the British Isles. By 1927, the company had successfully grown and Judge relocated from Hastings town centre to its current iconic, art deco premises on the seafront at St. Leonards-on-Sea.

During his lifetime, Judge won over 100 trophies, and exhibited in America, Australia, Japan and New Zealand. He was also honoured with one-man shows in London, New York and Washington and had 83 acceptances in the annual exhibition of the Royal Photographic Society.

That's quite a CV, and the proof of his talent can be seen in this selection of stunning topographical photographs (the majority dating to the 1930s), all of which are scanned from the original glass plate negatives, guaranteeing vintage views of tip-top quality.

What's striking is how everywhere looks utterly GORGEOUS. If you're still wondering where to go on your summer holidays this year, you could do worse than stick a pin in the Judges Postcard Archive Collection. Honestly, we think these photographs should be prescribed on the NHS - browsing through is such a soothing experience. If you'd like to see more then you can look through the entire collection here.

We're delighted to exclusively represent the Judges collection, which joins other postcard archives including J. Salmon and John Hinde. If you're looking for places, then we ARE the place!

Wherever you are, and whatever you're searching for we'd love to help. You can reach us by emailing [email protected] or calling 020 8318 0034. .
