Charles the Bald, Carolingian Emperor, on his throne, 9th century. He wears an extraodinary crown and holds a long rod. Squires on either side hold his great sword, spear and shield. From an illustration in a Bible presented to the king in 869 by the canons of St. Martin of Tours. Carlo il Calvi seduto in trono.
