Costume of an Incroyable.. Costume of an Incroyable. He wears a silk bicorn that recalls the hats of Italian infantry soldiers. The French style suit in dark blue wool has large shell buttons, high-waisted breeches and a very high-cut gilet (waistcoat). He carries a crooked stick. In 1797, buttons the size of plates were seen. Handcolored etching by Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr. from Costumes of the Directory, Rouquette, Paris, 1875. The etchings were made from designs by Eugene Lacoste and Draner after prints of the era 1795-99
