The King's Gate, Holbein Gate or Cockpit Gate, London, 1720s

The King's Gate, Holbein Gate or Cockpit Gate at Whitehall leading to Westminster. English Gothic style gate with crenellations and medallions built by King Henry VIII in 1531, demolished in the mid-18th century. Walls finished with chequerboard pattern of flint and stone, decorative carved panels, royal coat of arms, gryphons holding shields, portcullis, fleur-de-lys and Tudor roses. A carriage approaching the arched entrance, several figures in the foreground. Copperplate engraving by an unknown artist published in London, circa 1720
