Knight of Malta in battle costume
Knight of Malta in 18th century battle costume, his red jacket decorated with a large white cross on the chest, tricorn, buckle shoes and sword. The Order of Malta grew out of the Knights Hospitaller, a military order founded in 1099 to protect and care for pilgrims to Palestine. It survives today as the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
