Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Madame de Sevigne, French epistolary writer famous for her letters to her daughter Madame de Grignan, 1626-1696. She wears a skull cap and bows, hair in ringlets, black silk mantua dress with lace collar and cuffs decorated with ribbons. She holds a quill pen and letter. After a portrait in oils by Pierre Mignard and a miniature on vellum in the editor's collection.
