Netley Abbey, Hampshire, view towards the east from the transept. Ruins of a 13th century Cistercian abbey destroyed during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. It is reported that Jane Austen visited Netley, finding inspiration for her novel Northanger Abbey (published in 1817). Handcoloured copperplate engraving by J.
