General Charles Joseph Gordon and his kings at Gravesend, England, at the proposed Gordon Camp. Gordon, also known as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, Gordon of Khartoum, was a celebrated war hero who died in January 1885 while defending the besieged city of Khartoum from Muslim religious leader Muhammad Ahmad. His martydom propelled him to an almost Christ-like status in Britain. He lived in Gravesend from 1865-1871, and was heavily involved with charity work alleviating poverty, including of the homeless children depicted
