Jul. 07, 1975 - The overlord embroidery on show in Britain for the first time; The British public now, for the first time, will have a chance to see the 272 feet long overlord Embroidery, when it goes on show at the city of London Guildhall from July 25th to August 25th. It illustrates the events in Britain leading up to and including Operation Overlord. the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944 The greatest amphibious operation in the history of warfage, The vast work was the idea of Lord Dulverton, who served in Normandy in 1944, and he commissioned artist Sandra Lawrence to do the designs which were reproduced in applique embroidery by a team of 20 girls from the Royal School of Needle work. The Embroidery, which took over 5 years to complete, consissts of 34 panels, each measuring 8 ft by 3 1/2 feet, with a total length of 272 ft, making it 41 ft longer than the Bayeux Tapestry and the largest work of its kind in the world.
