Operation Overlord embroidery on show, London

Jul. 07, 1975 - The overlord embroidery on show in Britain for the first time; The British public now, for the first time, will have a chance to see the 272 feet long Overlord Embroidery, when it goes on show at the City of London Guildhall from July 25th to Aug. 25th. It illustrates the events in Britain leading up to and including Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944 the greatest amphibious operation in the history of warfare'. The vast work was the idea of Lord Dulverton, who served in Normandy in 1944 and he commissioned artist Sandra Lawrence to do the designs which were reproduced in applique embroidery by a team of 20 girls from the Royal School of Needlework. The embroidery, which took over 5 years to complete, consists of 34 panels, each measuring 8 feet by 3 1/2 feet, with a total length of 272 feet, making it 41 feet longer than the Bayeux Tapestry and the largest work of its kind in the world. Photo Shows Janice Atkinson (left) and Wendy Hogg, both from the Royal School of Needlework with one of the panels showing the visit to the invasion beaches by King George VI, Winston Churchill and Field Marshal Brooke, in the company of Generals Eisenhower and Montgomery. It was on Show at today's preview at the Guildhall
