Operation Overlord embroidery on show, London

Jul. 07, 1975 - The Overlord Embroidery on show in Britain for the first time: The British public now, for the first time, will have a chance to see the 272 feet long Overlord Embroidery when it goes on shows at the city of London Guildhall from July 25th to Aug 25th. It illustrate the events in Britain leading up to and including Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944 the greatest amphitious operation in the history of warfare'. The vast work was theidea id Lord Dulverton who served in Normandy in 1944, and he commisioned artist Sandra Lawrence to do the design which were reproduced in applique embroidery by a team of 20 girls from the Royal School of Needlework. The Embroidery, which too over 5 years to complete. consist of 34 panels, each measuring 8 feet by 3 feet, with a total length of 272 feet, making it 41 feet longer than the Bayeux Tapestry and the largest work of its kind in the World.: Photo shows Janice Atkinson, from the Royal school of Needlework which reproduced the embroidery pictured with one of the panels showing King Georcevi, Winston Churchill and Field Marshal Booke as they toured the invasion beaches with Generals Eisenshower and Montgomery
