The bridge at Exermont - Argonne
On Sept 29th 139 Regiment attacked Exermont and two men, Lt John McManigal and Pvt. Ernest Simpich were wounded as they crossed the bridge. Desperate for water they crawled down to the river. THey were left behind when the Germans counter-attacked and forced the Americans out of the village. They spent two days lying by the stream before the Germans took them prisoner. { TCH - pp174-6 ]
