Col Driant's command post in the Bois des Caures
Verdun - This bunker was the HQ for Col Driant who commanded the Chasseurs who held the Bois des Caures for two vital days right at the beginning of the battle Col Driant [ 61 yrs ] was in command of the 56 and 59 Chasseurs a Pied in the Bois des Caures [ hazel-nut ] where the Germans launched their initial assault on 21 Feb. Despite a furious artillery barrage they held out until the 22nd thus delaying the Germans for a vital 24 hrs but only 100 out of 1, 200 got out of the wood and amongst the dead was Driant who was buried with military honours by the Germans
