Col Driant's command post - Bois des Caures - Verdun
This bunker was the HQ for Col Driant who commanded the Chasseurs who held the Bois des Caures for two vital days right at the beginning of the battle. Colonel Driant (aged 61) was in command of the Chasseurs a Pied in the Bois des Caures (Hazelnuts) where the Germans launched their initial assault on 21st February. Despite a furious artillery barrage they held out until the 22nd thus delaying the Germans for a vital 24 hrs but only 100 out of 1, 200 got out of the wood. Amongst the dead was Driant who was buried with military honours by the Germans
