Destroyed powder store memorial, Troyon Fort, Verdun, France
Fort Troyon is part of a system of fortifications called Sere de Rivieres built to protect the city of Verdun. The Austro-German Army pressed forward to the entrance of the fort and demanded the French surrendered. The French refused to surrender and the fort was bombarded with shells which destroyed several sections. However, the French managed to successfully defend the fort, thus protecting the strategic city of Verdun
