Fields of Battle - Argonne
Butte de Vaquois. This view of the mine craters along the crest of the Butte de Vauquois shows the German trenches on the bottom edge of the craters with the opposing French lines marked by the white memorial in the centre of frame on the other side of the crater. In 1914 Vauquois was a village atop a 290m sandstone gaize ridge which was captured 24 Sept 1914 by the invading Germans
