Fields of Battle - Arras
La Carriere Wellington Underneath Arras are a number of medieval chalk quarries which were utilised by the British to shelter their troops after the destruction of Arras in 1914. Prior to the attack at Arras (in 1917) these quarries were enlarged to take 24, 000 troops and tunnels driven towards the German lines to enable the troops to attack without having to cross No Man's Land
