Fields of Battle - Cambrai
Bourlon Wood, Cambrai The British attack at Cambrai on 20 Novembe3r 1917 was the first time that tanks had been used as a massed force. However the initial success was enveloped by a highly effective German counter-attack and when the battle finished on 6 December very little ground had actually been taken. Bourlon Wood was a crucial position in the battle and the British failure to capture it was an important element in the eventual stalemate
