Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace - Bunker, Montfaucon

The Kronprinz observation bunker at Montfaucon. The bunker is the rectangular structure made from the stone of the destroyed church. Montfaucon-en-Argonne was a heavily fortified hill which gave the Germans observation over the southern part of the Meuse-Argonne battlefield. The Germans had built a number of heavily reinforced observation posts, one of which (the sunlit rectangular building to left of centre of shot) was constructed from part of the old abbey building atop the hill. The hill was a crucial objective on 26 September 1918 - the first day of the battle of the Meuse Argonne - and the controversial failure of the 79th Division to achieve this would have a serious impact upon the course of the campaign.
