Fields of Battle, Lands of Peace - St. Mihie, Les Eparges

Les Eparges: the 34 mine craters on the ridge of the Les Eparges make this one of the most intensely mined areas of the Western Front. This is the remains of a German MG post. When the Saint-Mihiel Salient was formed in September 1914, this ridge with commanding views of the plain of the Woevre and lying just to the east of Les Eparges, marked the northwest border of the Salient. The French attacked the ridge on 17th February 1915 and the fighting persisted until 17 April with the French controlling most of the ridge but with the Germans clinging to the southern slopes and the extreme eastern end of the ridge, known as Point X. Both sides then began mining operations which continued until April 1917. The Germans blew 46 mines and the French 32 on a front of only 800 metres without any change in the line. Today there are some 34 craters in total
