Fields of Battle - Oise
Carving of a Zouave solider in the Carrieres de Montigny. Zouaves were light infantry originally raised from French colonies in North Africa but who were expanded to include men of any nation: their uniform was based upon the costume of north Africa and included a short jacket with baggy trousers with a fez head dress. The limestone ridge to the north of the river Aisne is notable for the number of subterranean queries - creutes - which were excavated to provide building stone for the buildings and abbeys of the region
