De Garde au balcon'. Carriere de Chauffour. De Garde au balcon'. A bas-relief carved in the rock at the Carriere de Chauffours by L. Bonnyaud, who was a sergeant in the 240th Regiment d'Infanterie in 1916. This sculpture is 292 kms wide and 162 high. It shows a French soldier - poilu - on guard in a mountain region and depicts his backpack - barda - on the right with a rat nibbling at the top. This limestone quarry served as a shelter for French soldiers and has an extensive range of carvings by various sculptors
