Fields of Battle - Verdun
Looking south from the German assault positions towards the Bois des Caures Col Driant ( 61 yrs ) was in command of the 56 and 59 Chasseurs a Pied in the Bois des Caures ( Hazel-nut Wood ) where the Germans launched their initial assault on 21 Feb. Despite a furious artillery barrage they held out until the 22nd thus delaying the Germans for a vital 24 hrs but only 100 out of 1, 200 got out of the wood and amongst the dead was Driant who was buried with military honours by the Germans
