Fort de Malmaison - Chemin des Dames
Fort de Malmaison - Chemin des Dames. This French fort was built as part of the Sere de Rivieres defence line in 1877. In 1884 the French discovery of an improved explosive which they called melinite led to trials at Malmaison which was effectively destroyed by about 150 shells. The French were horrified and abandoned the fort but used the experience to improve other forts [Douaumont etc]
