Monolith overlooking the Gond marshes - Battle of Marne
33m high monolith designed by architect Paul Bigot and sculptor Henri Bouchard. 2000 ton concrete and stone pillar overlooking the Gond marshes. The site was chosen by Marechal Foch to commemorate one of the most crucial battles in the seven day battle of the "Miracle of the Marne". Here the Moroccan Division under General Humbert held the Germans on 5/9 Sept, with the 77/RI recapturing the chateau on the 9th.The figures at the base are L-R Sarrail, Langel de Cary, Foch, Franchet d Esperey, Manoury and Gallieni with Joffre and a poilu in the centre
