Last Post - Menin Gate - Ypres

Every night at 2000 Last Post is sounded beneath the Menin Gate. Last Post was sounded at the unveiling of the Menin Gate on 24 JUly 1927.It became a nightly event in 1929 and the Last Post Committee was formed in 1930 and the men were drawn from the Ypres Fire Brigade. The ceremony was suspeneded on May 20 1940 when the Germans invaded but onSept 6 1944, even as Polish forces were stil fighting to clear the town of the invaders, a bugler sounded Last Post. The Menin Gate commemorates 54, 900 men who were killed between Au 4 1914 and Aug 15 1917 and who have no known grave. It was designed by Sir Reginald Bloomfield
