Quatre Cheminee - Verdun Battlefield
Huge bunker, about 25m deep, on the edge of Les Vignes Ravine which acted as shelter and aid post for Thiaumont, Fleury and Froidterre. On 22nd June 1916, Germans saturated the area with over 100, 000 gas shells and gas penetrated the interior and many wounded were asphyxiated. At 09:30 on the 23rd, a group of German soliders reached the shelter and threw grenades down the ventilation shafts but a French counter-attack drove them away.
