Scott's Post, Polygon Wood

Scott's Post. Seemingly named after Lieutenant Colonel Allan Humphrey Scott, DSO, the commanding officer of the 56th Battalion (New South Wales), who is buried in Plot II, Row A, Grave 12. Buttes NB Cem. At 27, Scott, who served with distinction at Lone Pine, Gallipoli, was one of the youngest battalion commanders in the AIF and he was killed by a sniper on 1 October 1917 near the Butte while briefing the CO. Polygon Wood was an important position in October 1914 when it was held by the British during the battle for the Menin Road. It was lost in April 1915 during the German gas attack of 2nd Battle of Ypres and not re-taken until September 1917 when the Australians took the wood after five days of furious fighting. Buttes New British CWGC (Commonwealth War Graves Commission) - 2, 133 named graves and 1, 703 unknowns - 80% of total. This shot shows the memorial to the Australian 5th Division on what used to be the old rifle butte which gives the cemetery its name
