Supposedly men of the French 137th Royal Infantry were waiting to attack when they were buried alive by German artillery. Almost certainly were dead soliders simply buried in a convenient trench and marked by their rifles. All the bayonets have now been stolen. The memorial was funded by George Rand, a wealthy American
