One of a collection of 126 miscellaneous papers relating to Gen Sir Augustus Francis Andrew Nicol Thorne's service on the Western Front and the life of his family at home, 1 Jan 1915-31 Dec 1916.Comprising: letters and postcards to his children (chiefly his daughter Diana) and letters from various correspondents to him and his wife; Thorne's copy of 1st Division Standing Orders for War, May 1914, with revised edition, July 1915 (Thorne was DAA and Quarter Master General), 1st Division, February-August 1915); bill for alterations to.303 Rigby Mauser Rifle, February 1915; Thorne's wife's passport issued March 1915 and used for visits to France to see her husband, September 1916-December 1917; order of memorial service for officers and men of 1st Bn Grenadier Guards killed at Neuve Chapelle, March 1915, at St Paul's Knightsbridge, April 1915, including Capt The Hon George Henry Douglas-Pennant; letters of congratulation on his DSO, January 1916; copies of four letters from the Prince of Wales, February-June 1916, including his Report on maintenance of the army defending the Suez Canal, March 1916; telegram ordering Thorne to take over command of the 3rd Bn Grenadier Guards, November 1916, with a copy of his first orders
