1906 San Francisco Earthquake

Troops from the Presidio walk east along Market Street after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Part of their mission was to protect private and public property as well as to assist police and firefighters. Smoke is billowing out of the tall Call Building, one of America's first skyscrapers. Fires raged for days after the quake. Around 30, 000 buildings were destroyed and more than 3000 people died in this disaster. There was over $400 million (in 1906 dollars) in damage
