Confuciusornis sanctus ancient bird, illustration
Holy Confucius bird (Confuciusornis sanctus), a flighted species dated 30 million years after Archaeopteryx, showed many advanced features with modern day birds such as a toothless beak and flight capabilities. Primitive features it does not share with modern day birds include no bony keel on the sternum (important for attachment of flight muscles), absent alula (thumb wing) and three clawed fingers
