In alchemy, the salamander signified the spiritual remnant of a dragon, the roasting was believed to impart spiritual powers to the salamander. Alchemy was the pseudoscientific predecessor of chemistry, which among other ideas is best known for its practitioner's trying to turn base metals into gold
