Alexandre Petion, Haitian Revolutionary, 1822
The Oath of the Ancestors (detail), painted in 1822 by the French Neoclassical artist Guillaume Guillon-Lethiere (1760-1832). Lethiere was of mixed Caribbean and French parentage. The painting depicts the alliance in 1802 of two of Haitis founding revolutionaries, the mixed-race general Alexandre Petion (shown here) and the Black general Jean-Jacques Dessalines. Haitian independence was declared in 1804
