American Civil War, Battle of Petersburg, 1865

Lithograph entitled and captioned: The Battle of Petersburg, Virginia, 1865, This great and decisive battle was fought on Sunday, between the Union heroes under General Grant, and the Rebel hosts under Lee; resulting in the total overthrow of the traitors, and the capture of both Petersburg and Richmond, with vast amounts of war material, and an estimated loss to the rebels of 15, 000 in killed and wounded, and 25, 000 prisoners, while the total Union loss is placed at less than 7000. The Richmond-Petersburg Campaign was a series of battles around Petersburg, Virginia, fought from June 9, 1864, to March 25, 1865. Popularly known as the Siege of Petersburg, it was not a classic military siege, in which a city is usually surrounded and all supply lines are cut off. The campaign was nine months of trench warfare. Lee finally yielded to the overwhelming pressure and abandoned both cities in April 1865, leading to his retreat and surrender at Appomattox Court House
