Benjamin Rush's Tranquilizer Chair, 18th C
Benjamin Rush (1746-1813) was a physician and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. His study of mental disorder made him one of the founders of American psychiatry. Rush believed that many mental illnesses were caused by disruptions of blood circulation or by sensory overload. As a treatment device, he invented a tranquilizer chair with restraints and a sensory-deprivation head enclosure
