: Black Panther Party, We Shall Overcome

Black Panther Party, We Shall Overcome

In 1963, folksinger Joan Baez, led a crowd of 300, 000 in singing We Shall Overcome at the Lincoln Memorial during the civl rights March on Washington. President Johnson used the phrase in a speech delivered after the violent Bloody Sunday attacks on civil rights demonstrators during the Selma to Montgomery marches, thus legitimizing the protest movement. With the arrival of Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and The Black Panthers in the 60s and 70s, songs like E??We shall overcomeE?n and E??Say it loud: IE??m black and IE??m proudE?n reflected the hope that their leaders were instilling in them. The Black Panther Party was a revolutionary black nationalist and socialist organization founded by Bobby Seale and Huey Newton in 1966. Black Panther Party membership reached a peak in 1970, with offices in 68 cities and thousands of members. In-fighting among Party leadership led to expulsions and defections that decimated the membership. The history of the Black Panther Party is controversial. Scholars have characterized the Black Panther Party as the most influential black movement organization of the late 1960s. Other commentators have described the Party as more criminal than political.
