Blood Storage Refrigerator, 1940's

The door of a refrigerator is open showing two shelves of bottles of blood. A sign on the tray below the freezer reads: 94th Evac. Hosp. Circa 1940's. In 1948 Dr. Carl W. Walter, a trained surgeon, developed a plastic bag for the collection of blood. Prior to this, glass bottles are used to store blood, but their fragility and susceptibility to contamination prompted him to devise a stronger and more portable container using plastic, which revolutionized blood collection. The 94th Medical Evacuation Hospital was in Italy 1942-1945
