Boyle Conducting Pressure Experiment, 1669
Entitled: Eight foot mercury barometer and water pumping demonstration from 4 story house proving law that height of fluids raised by suction or pressure varies inversely to its specific gravity. Diagram showing Robert Boyle's experiment to demonstrate the greatest height to which water could be raised by pumping. Boyle stood on a roof approximately 10 meters above a barrel of water and used a pump to suck water from the barrel up a pipe. Boyle showed that due to atmospheric pressure there was a maximum height that water could be drawn to.
