Buffalo Soldiers, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1900

Entitled: Last inspections of Co. H, 9th Cavalry before leaving for China. Buffalo Soldiers originally were members of the US 10th Cavalry Regiment of the US Army. This nickname was given to the Negro Cavalry by the Native American tribes they fought in the Indian Wars. The term became synonymous with all of the African-American regiments formed in 1866: 9th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 24th Infantry Regiment, and 25th Infantry Regiment. The Buffalo Soldiers were established by Congress as the first peacetime all-black regiments in the regular Army. The Boxer Rebellion was lead by a Chinese secret organization called the Society of the Righteous and Harmonious Fists against the spread of Western and Japanese influence there. After several months of growing violence against the foreign and Christian presence in Shandong and the North China plain, in June 1900 Boxer fighters, convinced they were invulnerable to foreign weapons, converged on Peking (Beijing), China's capital, until an international force that included American troops subdued the uprising.
