Chiang Kai-shek

Chiang Kai-shek (1887 - 1975), Chinese statesman and military leader, in Taipei. He joined the United Revolutionary League (later Kuomintang) and took part in revolution against the Manchus and establishing the Republic of China in 1912. After unifying China, Chiang began a campaign against the communists of China. In 1937 war broke out between China and Japan. In 1945, when the war ended, civil war began in China between the Communists and Kuomintang. The Kuomintang collapsed and Chiang and his government were driven to Taiwan (Formosa), where Chiang took command
